I just completed changing out my 10 inch brakes, front and rear. I now have a nasty wobble pretty much starting at 15/20 mph that I never had before. I wanted to get your feedback on the two directions I am thinking after searching "wobble" here on the forum.

    1) I accidently torqued down one of the front axle nuts way too much! I went back in and realized that I broke the tab off the inner washer (not the outter one with the bent over tab). I looked for the small tab but couldn't see it amidst the new grease. Could that tab be hanging up in my outter wheel bearing? Or could I have mashed the racer in when over tourquing it? And one of these have caused the bearing to do the death wobble?

    2) I pretty much lost track with which tire went back on the corresponding hub and probably for the first time in 16 years. I had one rebalanced that a weight had fallen off of, but besides that I have not give them attention in the 17 years I have owned the Jeep...balancing or rotating. Could a rebalance on the tires help?

Oh yeah, no wobble when the brakes are applied, so that is why I am thinking wheel bearing but I am open to any suggestions you might have.

What do you mean by wobble? I'm guessing there could be several causes. Did you bring the spare into use, perhaps? When you say you were changing out your brakes, did you do an 11" brake conversion, or just routine stuff.

If all you did was replace the shoes, could it be more of a "grab" than a wobble?

Are you sure of which wheel is causing the wobble? You could try jacking it up and spinning each wheel by hand to see if there are any obvious issues (I'm guessing you did that already, but worth mentioning). My final thought: I wonder if you could have bent or misaligned a rim by torquing a wheel down crooked or by overtorquing?

I dunno if any of that helps, but I went through something similar on my '79. The culprit was a rim that didn't go back on straight.

Also a possiblilty is the little tang from the washer left a ap when you torqued everything down, then go dislodged so there is alot of play after and causing the wheel to wobble.

Bluecomet is on to something with the rim being tightened crooked, definate would be resposible for soing what you are saying.

X3. It's pretty easy to get a stock rim hung up when you go to tighten it down. If that's the case, hopefully you didn't wail on it to hard and bend the mating surface of the rim.

On the other hand, the fact that stepping on the brakes stopped the wobble, it is entirely possible that Dan's theory is the culprit; In any case, I'd sure want to know where that broken-off piece of the outer washer went to... Also if the washers are in that bad of shape, I'd seriously think about replacing them as well as the wheel bearing nuts. I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut that they've been tightened via the hammer and screwdriver method at least once during their lifetime. ;)

Yes, all new washers and nuts. Yes, the old nuts were hammer and chiseled! And no, keep the 10 inch brake set up. And no, I haven't tried the "jack up and spin" concept. Rims are aftermarket steel.

I think I will at least need to get greasy again and look at the bearing and hub to see if I can find the small tab. Strong possibility it did break loose like Dan said. How do you know if you have done damage to a bearing? Does it not spin properly or there a way to tell by messing with it?

Also, in relation to the torqued rim possibility, what are the torque specs for the lub bolts? I mainly just hand tighten with a cross shaped lug wrench. Thanks!
