    My '79 got a used engine from the auto guys. It has the number:

    105C18 or

    105018

    stamped on a flat area on the passenger side of the block. It is a 258 with a serpentine belt. Any one tell me what year it is. My thinking is a '83.

    Wow cool! Do you get that by reading the number backwards?

    Hey Jim,

    I'm curious too. How the heck did you come up with that?

    Thanks, by the way. Now I can get the correct parts when needed.

    I'd tell you but then I would have to....
    how to answer the question ? see below
    I might add that the same codes are used for all years of 232/258 engines, although the same number doesn't mean the same year for earlier engines (clear as mud ?)
    1 = 1968 for earlier 232/258 engines
    since barry states it has serpentine belt, and all Calif 258 engines from 1981thru 1986 (CJ) 1988? Wrangler used serpentine belts, that's my best guess
