My son bought this jeep for parts to repair my 67 CJ5, which he wrecked. After swapping parts he has decided to fix it up for his own use. It is titled as a 67 cj5, but it's drivetrain doesn't match anything I have ever seen before.
First, it has a full floating rear axle, cast iron differential covers, the steering bellcrank is mounted on the front axle tube, the steering knuckles are bolted to the knuckle and has a tube cross member under the grille.
The body has vin 8505-12215 and has the brace for the spare tire mount on the left side (a mirror image of my Jeep). Someone swapped in a Ford 300ci 6cy from a Maverick, which isn't too bad an engine.
Could the frame and drivetrain be from a military model? We searched for a s/n on the frame and found none. Spring shackles are more recent style.
Anybody recognize this undercarriage? Any help is appreciated. We may want to part it out.
JEEP = Just Empty Every Pocket!!!

The rear axle could be from an mb/gpw.

    That's my opinion also. It's a Spicer 23-2 from either an MB/GPW or a very early CJ-2A.

Just out of curiousity.... How does the body tub fit on the frame?

Is the rear wheel aligned with the opening in the tub?

Does the body overhang the frame a little in the rear?

Does the frame have gussets at the front bumper?

Thank you all, you have all been very helpful!
    After searching the s/n I found it to be a 67 DJ5 2wd tub.
It fits the frame well, no overhang on back, centered rear wheels, mounts line up, etc. The tube cross member under the radiator fits that era, too?
The mb/gpw undercarriage seems believeable. My searching the M38AA pic show the steering bellcrank mounted high on the frame like my CJ. It has 5.38 gears, and probably a T90 and M18 twin stick t/c?
What gussets on the front bumper mount should I look for? It has a big fabbed bumper that I'll have to look under.
    Thanks again!!

Don't worry about gussets. They are a good identifier for cj2A frames since the 2a had them and other cj's didn't.

Since you have already ascertained that the frame is a DJ5 the gussets are not relevant anymore.

I have seen cj5 body tubs on flatfender frames, and that's why I asked.

You might double check the rear axle and make sure it is not a dana 44 with a full float conversion........

That would be nice to have......

A 300 cu. in. ford from a Mavrick ??? that is interesting .that must have been one stout Mavrick. If it fits in the jeep they have a lot of torque. good luck.

Ha, just testing! "200" ci engine from a maverick.
Karl, I think only the body is from the DJ5, would the body mounts be the same, so that early and late body/frames could mated?
We pondered the Dana 44 rear axle, how would we tell? What era Jeeps would the Dana 44 be installed in?
Overall, it seems quite light duty, like an early jeep would be.
    Thanks all!
