Rattling Hood Hinges

Well, I figured I would shoot the hinges with some WD40 to stop the rust. Now the darn thing rattles. It seems there is plenty of play in the hinges. Is there suppose to be any type of bushing around the rod part of the hinge which fits into the slot part of the opposite side- if that makes any sense at all. It seems if the rod or male part of the hinge had a plastic bushing around it there would be room for such and the rattle would be gone. As of right now there is only some thin cork stripping glued to the front cowl where the hood fits down onto when closed.
    Any ideas........newbie

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

you could try loosening the hinge halves and coocking them under pressure and then retightening

Isn't there supposed to be canvas welting riveted to the cowl for the hood to sit on? Or am I thinking of somewhere else? Can't get to my tub to look, but it seems like there was.

Yep, canvas was on mine anyway, but it was in pretty bad shape. So I just used some weather seal foam. I have that on my list of things to replace. From the original post, I'm not sure where Gilly's rattle is coming from. I thought it might be at the hinges:?

Yep it's the hinges that are rattling. I only mentioned the cork on the front cowl (engine area) for the hood to rest on as that is the only weatherstripping on the body where the hood rests. Didn't know if some other stripping would keep the hinges from rattling or not.

AFAIK the only weatherstrip/welting was used on the grille. If you can't cure the rattle by adjusting your hinges, try a length of door weatherstrip on the lip of the cowl by the hinges. You should be able to find a "universal" piece at a good autobody supply store or get a length at a salvage yard. The lip on the cowl is very similar to the pinchweld area in the door opening. Get one with a thickness big enough to fill the gap under the hood and exert some upward pressure when its closed. Should take up the slop in the hinge to stop your rattle. HTH

Or try a 1' piece of 1/2" radiator hose slit down the middle then stick it on the lip at the firewall where the hood meets. My jeep had it when I bought it, I removed it cause it looked wierd when the hood was up.
Next time I went for a drive I turned around and dug it out the trash cause obviously had a purpose.R)

I replace the "pin" from the hinges. Little bit of work but easy to do.

I had rattle with new hinges. I had to adjust the hinges, grill, and the moon and planets had to be aligned to make it stop.
