they also have the steering box mounted at an angle instead of flush to the frame which I thought was weird, I have to get pics of that yet

The mount just doesn't lok strong enough to me to take that kind of hunk out of it...

Most I've seen go through the bottom of the mount and replace the removed part with a piece of pipe welded into the mount. The shaft goes right through the pipe. You can do the same by welding a piece of pipe into the top of the mount and running your shaft through it. My Jeepster has a body lift so the shaft clears the mount.

    mine looks similar
has half pipe welded into the cut out portion
also has a heavy plate bolted across the top of the cutout
allows the shaft to be removed if needed
your shaft might hit that though, up too high

If it was me I was going to put a pipe in it if it has to go through the mount... That would be proper and ok.

The shaft is actually just lieing there, it has never been hooked to the column, this was an unfinished project I bought.

Now I understand why you were questioning it yesterday. Seems like a section of pipe cut in half and welded in there would clean things up considerably.

If you look close in this picture you can see the notch in mine. I never reinforced mine but mine is notched so little that it is no where near what I would call cut out.
