rusty 70

howdy,i just purchased an old rusted out 70 cj up here in b.c.the bodies had it,but the reason i jumped was its got an od unit,v6, and ramsey pto winch.comp's 175 across the board but it smokes,i'm bettin valve seals.
\ it seams for the last 9 years it's been used to move boats around a yard.i've already got a 70 w/v6,31's thats in pretty nice shape,as soon as i figure out how to post pic's i'll do so.
anyway,my stupid question of the day is how doe's the od work?
how do i shift and when.
ps,bought it today,will pick up tomorrow.is my wif e gonna kill me.!!!

Welcome from Wisconsin. Your OD is realy just a reduction gear, something like 25% reduction when in use. Shift like you normally do and use it when ever. I use mine mostly for highway (anything over 45 mph). Some use it around town to, depends on personal preference and a lot on axle gearing. BTW, good find. If you don't mind, how much did you pay?

 

Well, almost. It's really not a reduction of 25% it's an overdrive. It increases the gear you are in by 25%. I suppose you could say it reduces your engine RPMs by 25%. If it reduced your gearing it would be an underdrive.

 

up here in canada,there's not as many jeeps so it's a bit more expensive,but i paid 600.the winch is a ramsey pto modelmx200r and the od is a warn mod 3314.it has the heavy duty springs 13 leaf and the frame is in great condition.i might just rebuild this one the way i want and sell the other.hmmm,how do i post pics?
