As a former tire shop guy I can tell you that the siping will help tremendously on the slick pavement. Won't effect tire life there either. Where you do see a problem is on gravel/offroad (at higher speeds) driving. Siping willgretaly decrease the life of the tire if you are planning on using them for dirt roads etc. The gravel chews up the siped tread like who laid the chunk!

IMHO, if the tire manufacturer doesn't offer it standard as a valid value added selling feature, something is fishy. There has to be a negative aspect that doesnt meet safety or performance (or both). For instance, will that siped tire perform an evasive maneuver in the rain better, worse, or same?
In the 90's it was an upsell at the tire store -- its not offered anymore at many places. I would lay my money on the whole Ford Exploder tire rollover debacle -- somewhere in that safety category.

Im no expert, but was always skeptical. Now the service is hard to find? hmmmm summms up! Sounds like a Google assignment :D

    Tire makers have stronger opinions:
    • Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. does not recommend that passenger tires be siped, because the tread depth and the tire body are not designed for siping. Siping could invalidate the warranty if Goodyear determines that a tire failure was caused by the procedure.
    • Michelin Tire (who also market the popular BFG brand) does not recommend it, but acknowledge that it is common in the industry. Siping can alter or corrupt the design criteria that were established for that tire. It can cause excess noise, excess heat buildup, and it could ultimately cause damage to the tire. (e.d. This last statement is interesting as these are some of the benefits of siping large monolithic tread block)

I'm skeptical it does nothing. My snow tires for the VW are highly siped. Though I can see the point about the carcass not being designed for it.

Just dropped the Jeep off at the tire place. Decided to go with just the center blocks on all 4 tires per the advice of the tire guy. He said that full siping will make the tires wear twice as fast and that most people do just the center blocks on vehicles that see lots of pavement time. We'll see what happens....:toetap:

That makes sense. your ourside lugs are what take the load in a corner and movment in the lug causes wear.
