I'm helping put together a '52 M38a1 using the Herms power steering box mount. The jeep previously has a Ford van steering column hacked through the dash and fire wall. What are my options for a replacement steering column to work with the Herms kit? Can anyone give me a parts list of some sort for this conversion?

    Thanks,

    Don

The replacement options are pretty much limitless. I also have an M38A1 with Herm's steering kit. I am using a Jeep DJ steering column which looks a lot like the original though the steering shaft sticks out and is splined at the end. Your best best for a parts list is to go onto Herm's website and look at the steering section. Most of the parts are there... other than the column, of course.

By the way, where are you located? You may be close to one of the other members who may have additional input.

Thanks for the replies! I guess it's off to the junk yard :) Did you have to shorten the DJ shaft at all?

First, I got the column from AAA Motors in Boaz, AL. I went on a recommendation from McRuff and was happy that I did. The column came with a u joint and steering shaft and everything was in very good (maybe even great) condition. The column doen't need to be shortened though it has a small bracket spot welded onto it for dash attachment which will need to be removed and relocated for reuse if desired.

    Good luck!
