I'm tall, how do I fit in an early CJ5

I'm not tall, only 5'10" or so, but I'm rather, ahem, "girthy". I foresee a plywood drivers seat in my future.

I'm sure a lot of guys here can just hang their feet out the holes in the floorboards flinstones style R)

Just remember ,it was never meant to be a cadillac, so quit trying to make it in to one. As for comfort, just what were you thinking when you bought the old jeep? I'm 6' and the belly rubs the steering wheel, but I just climb right in and start it up and all the creature comforts seem not to matter anymore.

Now.... if it was going to be my daily driver, I'd probably sell the ecj5 and get me one of those fancy, new fangled, sissyfied, TJs and go wheeling with the guys sitting all cramped up in their 5s and be very comfy. But then I'd have to join the "quitters" club and sit in the corner more often.

I'm normally quite reserved and not out spoken, but I thought I'd try something new this afternoon, since I'm getting ready to buy a new PC:mad:

Hey now, I sat in the corner when I had an early 5 too... ;)
Next time you can ride with me and let the wife drive the 5 :D

Don't laugh, I cut up a picnic table and had treated 2x6 as my seat until I added the Boyink notch ;)

But if a little sheet metal mod makes it *waaaay* more comfortable to drive, why not? We mod them to improve them in other ways.

Again, for me it wasnt a matter of "comfort" - it was a matter of being able to drive it or not. Period.

Actually, that isn't too bad of an idea kinda. Has anybody ever just beat their floorpan/firewall out and relocated the pedals to give more legroom?:)

The smaller steering wheel will help get me some knee room, I had really thought of that. And as far as notching the rear fender housing I will have to wait until I can check out the body more. The jeep in question is the Perkins equipped I got from my girl friend's uncle. It's at my parents house in NY right now until I can get rid of one of the cars I have here in Boston to make room for it. If the body is in good shape I would feel bad cutting into but if it’s already had some mods over the years than I wouldn't be so apposed to notching it.

As far as a CJ6 goes...I actually found one for my roommate to buy, and he is shorter than me. That should be on the road and running around Boston by the end of September.

And I am prepared and willing to deal with the cramped driving position. I was just hoping there might be a quick and easy solution.

    Thanks for all the responces.

One note...take a peek under the drivers seat and see if it has adjustment sliders. If so, you can remove those and drop the drivers seat down 1". You won't need them anyway...

Just looked at your list of vehicles. 2 scramblers, 1 truck, 1 Waggy, and a CJ-5. Just wait, you may be cramped in the 5, but you'll drive it the most!

I bet if you did a good job and cut back both rear inner fenders, It might not even be noticable. I've seen it done nicely.

Not related, but Boyink, how do you replace the link with words and set it up so you can click on your words and go to the link? Man that sounded stupid. Maybe you'll understand my question.

I understand the question, and I've been wondering about that myself. I see it a lot, and wonder "how'd they do that?"
