    First, a Dana 27 isn't flanged.

Second, did you adjust the shoes so they aren't tight and the drum will slip off.

Third, are the drums swaged onto the lugs?

There's been several suggestions here recently on removing swaged drums.

Methinks you need more cowbellR) R) J/K , I assume you meant drums swaged unto the wheel studs. A search will turn up alot as Sparky said.

I was told I might need a hub puller since they won't come off.

Use something like a small pry bar that will sit on the inside lip of the drum (edge of the backing plate), then tap in a star pattern.

Pull hard enough and you'll pull the springs and shoes right off the backing plate.

The front hub is held on in an entirely different fashion than the rear 2 piece hubs that you need a hub puller for.

I can't see how a hub puller would be of benefit on the front axle. I've never had issues getting the drums off the front axle either though. Just backed the shoes off and removed the drum.

Assuming that you have both nuts removed from the spindle, maybe the spindle itself is damaged/grooved from a bearing spinning on it? Since it's a slip fit the slightest imperfection can cause problems.

Agreed...if you can back the shoes off it shouldn't be that bad. I've had a couple over the years (on trucks) that were just a nightmare to remove. It's the deal where the drum has a giant lip on it, and the star adjuster seems to be rusted solid. Removing them usually involves a lot of swearing, pounding and maybe some bleeding (blood, not brake fluid  ). But yea, as long as you can get to the adjuster to turn the shoes in, it *shouldn't* be that hard.

Do you have to remove the rear axel to get the rear brake drums off?

What nuts, see thats why I asked a question that probly sounds stupid!
Do you have to take apart the hubs and locks or what. I have only done rear drums, never fronts.

Yes, the outer hubs have to come off. Once they are off, you will be able to see down inside the inner hub where there are two very large nuts that also will have to be removed. Once these two nuts are out of there, the whol ehub/drum assembly will slide right off the spindle.
