I have a 51 M38 converted to 12v system. I'm haveing troubles finding a fuel gauge that reads properly. Is there anyone out there that has similar willys that can tell what gauges they are using? I had a Stewart Warner gauge that was close. Any help would be great....

I just don't see a need for a fuel level gauge in a Jeep. Its like every other fluid on the rig. I just top it off before every ride. Before I got into that habit though, I used a stick. Bad idea. Sticks are dirty.

I plumbed a cigarette lighter style voltage source in line under the dash of my 543B. Fiddled with the voltage offerings till the gage worked properly. Mine ran right at 4.5V. Just an idea.

    a) Diss-assemble guage.

    b) Remove needle.

    c) Paint red line at 1/4 mark.

    d) Re-assemble guage.

    e) Ship jeep.

Ford used 6 volt gauges up through the 60's To make them work in 12 volt systems, (Ford went to 12 v in 1956) go to a mid 60's Ford in the junkyard (I used a unit from a pickup truck)and pull the voltage reducer that's bolted to the back of the instrument panel. It's a small (about 1" x 3/4") silver box and has a 12 volt power wire connected to one terminal and two wires (one goes to the fuel gage and one to the temp gauge) connected to the other.

I think I'm going with Howards suggestion on this one. Who needs to spend money when i can just alter this existing gauge to seem as if theres only 1/4 tank. I dont know why I didn't think of this earlier.
