If you read my other thread you know I'm planning a rebuild. My CJ5came with pallet of spare parts from a CJ3B, including a transmissiion and transfer case. I'm thinking I can use or rebuild the these then do a swap. Are there any compatability problems I should know about? Any way of making sure they are the same without taking anything apart?

    thanks

2 versions of the T90 were used behind the 134 Fhead. both versions used the short input shaft.

T90A - 18 teeth on the input shaft. The T90A can be used with the long input shaft which was used on T90's behind the inline 6 engine. T90A was used 1964 and prior.

T90C - 16 teeth on the input shaft. lower first gear than the T90A. Cannot be used with long input shaft. T90C was used 1965 and later.

Despite the year jeep it came out of, or the markings found on the case or shifter cover, the only way to be 100% sure of a T90A or a T90C is to count the teeth on the input shaft.

I'm not claiming this to be Gospil, but per my research and experience, this is what I beleive to be the case.

Thanks linckeil. If both are from the same time period (roughly) they should match

When did they stop making the CJ3B?

'68 was last year for the 3B. All you really need to do is count the teeth on the input shaft and the output/drive gear teeth. Take the top of the transmission off for the input shaft and take the cover off the back of the t-case to see the drive gear. Regardless, final drive is the same, just 1st and 2nd gear would be lower with the newer version.
