I think I burnt my coil up. Is there anyway to test it w/o buying a new one. Heres the symptoms, Ran fine before, Left the key on by accident and it killed the battery. Replaced the battery and now it has no spark. Everything in the dist. looks fine/normal, then took the coil wire off and had no spark on that wire :( Checked for loose wires..had none. Tried stealing the coil off turtle but the PO soldered the connectors on  so couldnt take it off to test it that way.

ignition left on can fry the coil easy. especailly with an aptima. that's why it was dead. anyway, ohm it out with a meter. iirc proper ohms is arround 1 ohm. i'll look it up when i get home.

    oh yeah, CHEW!

Yes, you can check the resistance on the primary and secondary windings..... Just need to know the specs...

Jason, check the points first too, many of us old timers can tell you that the points will weld themselves together or pit so badly when the key is left on even for a short<pun> time, it will cause a no start condition.

I wouldn't sweat the coil testing too much. The resistance of a coil is really low and it's hard to get an accurate measurement with a multimeter. You can buy special meters that have a low resistance feature, and they zero out the lead and connection resistance, but that's too sophisticated for this problem. I'd just buy a new coil. You really need a spare if you don't already have one. Even a used coil from the pick-your-part could be used, if you're really short on cash.

X2, sounds like a coil to me, and they are a cheap replacement. If it isn't the coil, at least you will have a spare.

If you leave the key on, and the points just happen to be open - no problem. You'll just have a dead battery.

If you leave the key on and the points are closed - fried coil and/or points welded closed.

I'd probably go ahead and grab both. Mr. Reese is correct - both items are great trail spares anyway, and fairly cheap.

just popped into my head, but the points are probally welded together from the voltage for that long. look at them first. esay way is with a test lite on the negative side of the coil, it should pulse.

edit: just saw it posted above. to slow again.
