I noticed after Windrock that I now have a decent gear oil leak, it appears to be coming from the front bearing area since it is dripping from the bellhousing/tranny mating surface. It is also startignto get a little tough to get into gear from a standing start.

Whaddya think, front bearing/seal on the way out?

I have all the parts to re-do the T-90 and the D-18, its the time I don't have right now. :(

Yup, sounds like it's time for a rebuild. I had the same issues...but I let it go for a while (hoping it'd last until winter, then I'd rebuild it)...well, after another month of use (or abuse, maybe) the trans started getting pretty noisy, and oil loss seemed to get worst...so I pulled it out and have just finished the rebuild (still on the bench though, grrr) My trans definitely was in need of a front bearing, there was a lot of slop. Seems nice and tight now with new bearings and roller bearings throughout...and we'll see about oil leaks by the end of the weekend if I get my d18 back together and all of it back in the jeep. Good luck with your rebuilds.

    Hi,
One thing to check before you tear into the transmission... the t-90s are known for the shift rail plugs popping out, especially after off road trips. If oil is sloshed up into the shift rail bores it can pop the rail plugs out hydraulically as you shift into a gear. It can cause a heck of a lot of gear oil to come out the front or rear of the trans case.

Also, sometimes the hydraulic pressure in the shift rails can be enough to make these transmissions shift harder at times since you are overcoming pressure in the shift rail bores as you shift.

Some of the M-38A1 shift covers have threaded shift rail plugs at one or both ends of the trans case instead of the freeze plug style, like on most t90s. They also have pressure bleed holes drilled in the underside of the shift rail bores.

    Hope this helps.
