I recently brought my 72 CJ5 to my home in Norway from the US and am having problems getting it registered. It is pretty original, but I have no documentation saying what options were available in 72 to prove it is original. Does anyone know were I can find this?

Most important I have fender flares that I was told were dealer options but I have to prove this to register the jeep.

Also it seems my VIN plate on the firewall was stolen during shipping, is there somewhere else I can find this number.

They want you to remove the flares? That's odd. Dealers did sell a flare kit around that time, but I think you'd have to have the parts catalog supplement to prove it.

There should be a sticker on the dash with the VIN, unless it was removed for shipping. Do you have any documents showing the VIN? The registration from the US should list it.

I have My Maryland title and the dash plate has the serial number but not the full vin.

I need to find the vin somewhere on the jeep to match up with the papers.

What I reallly need to keep my flares is a some documentation showing it as an option.

On a '72, there is only one number - the VIN contains the serial number. It should be something like J2F835TA00001, where the last 5 digits are a sequential serial number. This is the number that appears on the dash too.

The title says j2f835te23243, but the plate on the dash says 23243 only.

Can you post a picture of the dash sticker? Every one I've seen has the full VIN.

Attached is the best picture I have. I have had this Jeep for two years I had no problem registering it in Maryland and I am 90% sure the firewall plate was there when I shipped it, I haveshipped 5 cars to Norway and US customes is very pick about all the numbers matching up. when I went to register here in norway I realived there was no Fire wall plate now that I am trying to lern more I also nohave no information on paint or trim codes. All I have are the dash plates and know that I look at them cloesly I thing this was a government Jeep.

The Nomenclature plate has the following data
    MFRS# Serial Number
    Registration Number
    Federal Stock Number
    Weight
    Payload
    Gross weight
    Date of Delivery
    Contract number
    Waranty

I was thinking of the yellow decal that is present on all the civilian Jeeps. If that is missing you can get a duplicate.

I don't know of anywhere else that the VIN or serial number is present on a CJ. However, if you go here http://www.c104.net/manual/Section_00A.pdf the original service manual shows that the serial number is part of the VIN, and that what precedes the serial number is a code for the configuration of the Jeep. Maybe that plus your dash plate will be enough.

On the nomenclature tag it says at the bottom " US Property ". This isn't a military Jeep is it? I have a 72 CJ and do not have any tags like the pics posted. Mine are like Tim suggested, a VIN tag on the firewall and a yellow/black sticker on the dash with the full VIN.

When I bought it two years ago I was told that it was a civilian Jeep, and I really did not pay much attention to the plates since I was so busy restoreing the interior. You would think I would have looked sooner but I really never thought about it until now.

The question now is how do I verify the history, should it even have a trim code sticker, or a yellow dash sticker and firewall plate?

You can see from the picture above it has been repainted and I have no idea what the original color was, which has been a small problem here because the Norwegian gov says its not original. Though I am fighting this one and will lkely win on that point, then on to try and keep my fender flares.

It is a civilian Jeep, owned by a US governmental entity. Not entirely uncommon.

It would seem the metal plates supply more information than the yellow tag originally on the dash so it was either removed or not placed on the dash from the factory.

Aside from that the PIN tag on the firewall should have been intact I'd think.

Isn't the Vin supposed to also be on the frame rail?? I have never actually seen it, but never really looked either. I was think behind the passengers side front spring hanger? Sound familiar to anyone? Good luck bro. All spots on the Jeep that sport the VIN are pointed out in the FSM.

I have looked on the frame rail and havent found it yet but I have heard that it might be in a diffrent spot on the 72.

Hey timgr, where do you get the duplicate yellow and black I.D. Sticker for your dash? My Jeep is missing this and I wouldn't mind getting one.

I thought that our friends who made the shifter stickers were making them. Sparky?
