Hello. First, I'm new to the forum and would like to say that this is a great site with a great group of people full of info!

Down to business...I'm rebuilding the t90 that was in my 3A and I have a couple questions. I'm rebuilding it with the t90C gears (35 tooth cluster, 16 tooth input) to get a lower first gear. Well, last night I had the thing just about back together and everything was going well...until I realized I had forgot to put the oil collector in. You know what that means...back apart. Anyway, my questions is this...are the oil collectors for the 33 tooth and 35 tooth cluster gears any different? I just want to make sure that there will be enough clearance in there...

Also, for those of you who have done this gear swap, what did you think about the results of the lower gearing??

    Thanks for the help,
    J

If you haven't taken it apart yet you might wait to see if it's necessary to have the collector. They quit putting them in the transmission, I don't know when or why.

Thanks for the reply Glenn. Yup, I question whether or not the oil collector is necessary. I did actually try to put it back in last night (only because I had already accidentally dropped the needle bearings from the input shaft while trying to fit the oil collector back in with the trans assembled)...but I found that the collector seemed to interfere with the larger cluster gear...it might have cleared it with some tweaking, but it was way too tight for my comfort. A friend of mine up here is rebuilding a t90 for his 2A too, and from talking with him last night it seems that his case was never even drilled for an oil collector. I think it's a later model t90, not from his 2A. So I ended up putting the trans back together without it. I will most likely trim my collector down enough so it will fit in there after assembly and then will just use what's left of it so I can put the screws back in to plug the holes.

    Just for reference,

The earlier t-90 oil collectors do work when converting to the t90C gear set. I just finished a rebuild of one this spring, using a 1946 t90 out of a 2A and installed the t90c gears, and it worked excellent with no clearance issues.
