i know most aftermarket stuff is made of 3/16, but exactly how much weaker is 1/18 steel compared to the 3/16 thick 2x4 square tubing? I am thinking weight issues. I dot think i have ever seen 1/18 get real mangled when it was in tubing form. How much wiegh could 1/18 take? say for a swing out tire carrier?

Most roll bar tubing is 1/8" or actually just a little thiner, .120 compared to .125. What you making??? You should be fine with it Id think..

just kind of thinking aloud. I am going to order steel tomorrow. I am debating on 1/8 tubing and 3/16 tubing for the side rails and to repair the rear of the trailer. Previously when i first got the traielr i used 3/16 for the front tongue, and now i think it might have been a bit over kill. so i can save a little $$ and get the 1/8 steel. At the same time i am thinking if i got extra of the 2/4 i could make bumpers for my jeep and possibly a set or two from the leftover. Also going to get 2x2 tubing to do my tire carrier, and also debating on going 1/8 of 3/16 for that, i jsut dont want it to rip apart, but do nto want to have massive amounts of wieght. Just trying to get on track with strength/weight ratio with steel.

I used 1/8" (.120 wall) 2 x 4 tubing for my rear bumper. I copied the Warn swingout carrier and it bolts to the face of the bumper. I sleeved the bolt holes for the bumper to frame mounts with DOM tubing (.250 wall) for strength, but my hinge plate bolts directly to the 1/8" with nuts welded to the inside. I have a 35" x 13.50 (heavy) tire on it and it seems fine after almost 2 years.
