Thanks to those who answered questions regarding taking my jeep apart. I was hoping that the timing chain would be visibly damaged, indicating that it was the problem. I am happy to report that there was quite a bit of slack, and when I slipped the new stuff on it fit just like it should. So I'm pretty hopeful that when its all back togther it will start up.

Now I'm waiting on the new fuel pump eccentric to come; it was worn down pretty well. Thanks to an old thread with a part number in it, I was able to order one from oldbuickparts.com for $29.75 + s&h.

When it's back together I'm considering changing from an oil bath filter to a newer type because I'm worried that the old metal element stuff is kind of rusty and may not allow enough air flow. Plus, leaves and other debris fall into the oil and muck it up. Any thoughts?

I suppose asking rather than just mining the forum would have served me better; thanks anyway.

If I don't take th oil pump apart, and just put it back together as it was will it be alright? I was reading th link you put in but it talks about changin the type of oil pump. It seems really hard to remove the cover (flathead screws don't seem like the easiest to gain purchase on). Does the pump need to be overhauled?

Depends, did the oil drain out? I wouldn't trust it to retain it's prime.

At the least I'd remove and inspect it and pack it with petroleum jelly to be sure when you start it your oil pressure will come up.

May not need to be touched at all, but for peace of mind, I'd pack it.
