I am looking at a '80 CJ5 that has the inline 6-258 but no transmission or transfer case. Which tranny/transfer fits this? Thanks for your help.

I find more often then not a medium duty T-176 4 speed in an 80 258 but as mentioned above anything will work.

Are these tranny's mentioned above pretty easy to pick up for an affordable price? I don't see them popping up much...maybe its because I spend most of my time on this board!! Any leads on where to look?

Check Ebay. I just looked and there are a number of four speeds on there currently.

The T-176 is a Ford pattern, so the NP435, (Ford) T-18 and T-19 will bolt up to its bellhousing. You'll need the AMC-to-Ford bellhousing and its clutch parts (ie T-150 or T-176 Jeep). Normally you would use a 2WD NP435 etc. and convert it to 4WD with an aftermarket kit. There is a 4WD NP435 that was used in Ford 4WD trucks, and it has the round New Process pattern, so you could possibly bolt up a D300 to this transmission. However, I think the NP435 and its adapter will be way too long for a CJ-5.

The best factory transmission for that year is the T-176.

    Tim,
Just to clarify, do you think the two wheel drive version of the Ford NP 435 is too long for a '73' CJ5 with a 304? From previous threads, I have read that the 304 is shorter than the 258.

I think it'll be ok, as long as you keep near the stock ride height. The V8 is something like 3" shorter than the I6, though I don't know how the location in the chassis compares in terms of the bell mounting plane - may be the same. Novak says that the NP435 is shorter than the T-18, but the trans and adapter mated to the D20 is a little longer (12.9" v. 14.2"). You'll need to think about the length of your rear driveshaft, and its angle. More than an inch or 2 of lift will greatly worsen the driveshaft angle.

I think the T-176 or T-150 bell is shallower than the T-15 bell, and the T-15 bell and a plate adpater was used with the Jeep T-18 and 258, So, you should be in the same ballpark as the stock 258/T-18 combo, if not doing a little better. I can't say for sure without measuring though, and I don't have those parts here.
