do yall think with the right fan setup you could use a stock radiator for the 304 on a 401? Right now it's got big Chrysler radiator in it that sticks up about 3 inches above the grill, and I've got a brand new radiator for the 304.

I'm trying to remember whether my buddy had to have a different one for his 401 or not. I don't think he did, but he has made so many changes to his Jeep over the last couple of years that I can't even keep up.

I've already paid for the radiator, and I'd hate to not be able to use it.

I'm almost positive that he didn't have to change radiators until he put the 350 in it, but even then he changed it because he won a high dollar radiator in a raffle. If no one else can answer you before tomorrow, I will ask him tonight.

I honestly think it will, and I am starting to think he told me he had a 3 core. I sent a pm to his daughter on another forum to ask him. Maybe she will answer before I leave for the day.

Just talked to him and he did have a 4 core, but he only had a 4 core because he rammed something through the stock 3 core and went ahead and got a 4 core when he replaced it. He ran a 3 core for a pretty good while with no problems, so to answer your question, it will work fine for you.

Yep, we replaced the standard rad with a 3 core because the plan was to replace the 258 with a V8.
I put a shroud on mine last year and it seems to pull air a whole lot better than without. Put one on if you don't have one now.

Yep I'll stick a shroud on it. And I've got a 7 blade fan off the 304 to replace the 4 blade on the 401. I was wondering cuz there was a funky little electric fan tied to the front of the grill, and the radiator in it was huge.

Kind of taking a step back, but it seems you are purchasing/trying alot of items that might work together or not or there might be small issues.

As a suggestion you might want to see if there is a local jeep club in your area. Usually you can "SEE" all kinds of setups so you can see if you want to do this or not.

I not trying to **** you off or anything but when you are restoing a jeep it makes it alot easier to do something that maybe someone already has done.

Good luck with your project I hope it works out !!!

That is actually the best advice you can give someone that is building something, other than that they need to come here to get info. Like the guy I called to find out about what radiator he ran with his 401, I have a ton of buddies like that from being in a 4x4 club.

Like I have told several people while I was working on their rig, why would you want to spend hours and even days trying to figure out how to make something work, when you know and have a phone number for someone who has already figured it out. Some still like to figure stuff out on their own and take days doing it. I for one don't mind asking questions, even if they end up being stupid questions in the end.

I don't like asking for directions when I am lost though.

I agree with what you say, and will do that from here on out. The reason I have stuff that might/might not work is because it was all purchased for a 77 cj5 with a 304 which was the first one I bought with intentions to restore it. I bought a bunch of parts and then the motor started knocking. :( So I got a line on a 401 that sounded like a good deal, so I went and bought it. Little did I know that it was a 74 with a better body than mine, and there was a good transmission in it. I think the transfer case is good in it too. So I just got all of it and turned my attention to the 74. Just using the 77 for whatever parts I might need now.
