Replacing windshield glass

Never tried this before. Is this a 'you-can-but-really-should-let-a-windshield-guy-do-it' kind of task, or is it as simple as some glue, the glass and weatherstrip?

Shouldn't need any glue, I wouldn't think. Just the new glass, a new rubber gasket, and some hot soapy water.

At one time I had two '76 Ford vans, one runner and one not. The runner had clear glass windows in the rear and side doors, and the junker had factory dark smoked glass. I swapped the dark ones into the runner and the clear ones back into the junker, and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. And I re-used all the rubber gaskets. Only took a couple of hours, by myself. You should be able to take the windshield frame off and lay it on a table or even on the yard, so you can get to it easier.

Well, I'm in the same boat, don't need a new windshield but would really like to replace the rubber windshield grommet. I have no idea on where to start, or which tools to use. If anyone on this forum has installed a windshield, I would sure appreciate any input.

I did, but should of just let the glass guy do it. Its doable, but a PITA. Be carefull as you might break the glass.

X2 on all of this, but my glass guy here in town only charges like $100 for the windshield and he installs it for free so that I can continue to be lazy. If you are installing one from another Jeep, go with Rondog's advice, if you are going to buy a new one, it might be worth checking with your local glass place before you go to the trouble of doing it yourself. Not sure why you need to replace your windshield, but in Ma. If you have compulsorily coverage on your Jeep the widshield is replace at no cost to you by the insurance.

The windshield is broken and the rubber bits aren't so elastic anymore. The Jeep isn't insured yet since its not on the road yet.

I am debating this now. In MA they will only cover it if the glass is broken. So if your gasket leaks (like mine) you need to crack the windshield with a hammer and they will replace both for you.

I would use a lawnmower blade. I don't know why, just seems right.:)

Hmmm, I quote that movie quite a bit, maybe that is why I figgerd a lawnmower blade would be appropriate.:) :)

Given the Jeep aggrevation factor my fist is bound to go through it at some point R)

I paid $50 to have one installed locally...I supplied everything. I figured it was cheaper than the 2nd piece of glass I'd have to buy if I did it... :)

Can you buy a new rubber gasket for the windshield? I've got glass from one windshield that I'd like to put in another that's in better shape.

THe windshield, cowl rubber and windshield rubber total $173 before shipping at Quadratec. Items 32501.11, 32501.10 & 12501.30 . I'm not sure I could Intentionally break anything on the Jeep, but its broken already anyway. Sad, 'cause the 1994 inspection sticker is on there.
