I have recently come into possession of a 1976 CJ5 which has not run since about 1986. It has sat unattended in a garage for 20 years, what do I begin? Here are some initial problems I have encountered:

    1. There are no keys. I figure I can just buy a new lock clyinder and install it. Since he put on a new fiberglass body and placed the key clyinder in the dash this should be easy.

    2. We can't move it. I have placed it in neutral (as far as I can tell) and tried to push it. Nothing. All is does is rock in place. I was considering the wheels are all rusted and I need to tie a cable and pull it to break it free. Or take each wheel apart individually and fix it (more work).

    3. Starting the Engine. What do I need to do before I can turn the key? I have been warned about letting old gas enter into the engine, and I should clean out the entire fuel line before I turn it over. Also it has been suggested that I manually crank it a few times while place oil in the pistons so they don't freeze up.

    Thanks for the help guys!

    1st welcome.
I'd change the oil, pull the plugs and squirt a little oil in each cylinder.
Drop the gas tank and have it cleaned out. Replace the fuel lines, pull the carb and rebuild it, likely all gummed up inside and the gaskets are shot.
If it wont move try a gentle pull on it, you may need to smack the wheels a lttle with a 5 lbs hammer.

    And we need pics. :D

Mine hadn't moved in 12 yrs, it wouldn't steer because the joints were rusted, liberal spraying with PB blaster freed the joints up. Reluctant to move before liberal spraying of knuckles, driveshaft Ujoints, air in tires...

mine sat out for 18 years. I didnt even try to get the brakes to work cus the lines were cut and crimped. I rebuilt all the brakes with new master cylenders lines and everything. Totally rewired the jeep. Rebuilt the carb and drained all the old fluids and replaced with new. Got a new as tank cus the old one was all holey. Got new plugs wires and can cap and rotor. Your going to need almost everything thats rubber new. Youve got a progect ahead of you man. Have fun :)

X2 on all of this. Replace or check everything that is rubber, and if you can't replace the metal fuel line, put a compresser hose up to it and blow back toward the tank, once you take the tank out. Sounds like you have your work cut out for you, but it might be in good shape since it was in a garage. Like it has been mentioned, you might run into some wiring issues as well.

If you are carburated the fuel pressure is low and thus you can get the 5ft brake line sections from an auto parts store and make a couple of bends with an inexpensive bender.
