A new rack for the jeep

Hi all

I'm getting ready to go on my first trail ride witht the local jeep club. I will need to bring more stuff than I could possibly fit in my jeep, so I had to think of something.

One of my goor friend work in a shop where they built shelving for stores. So he has access to the tools to make stuff for him, or in that case, for a friend !!

I already have some storage boxes that bolts on the fender. I draw a quick sketch of what I needed and my friend built it. It is powdercoated some sort of gray that they were making that day.

It will fit all my trail gear, and more.

What do you think ???

Looks good. I just built something similar on the 7 project I have been working on. It's a little heavier, more of an overkill I would say, but we were low on steel at the time.

 

I think it looks good and everything. I'm just not sure how that holds more gear than just stacking up stuff in the back of the Jeep or something like that. The tool boxes on the side are pretty cool though. I'd think in order to actually carry more gear, it would have to be a cargo basket (or something similar) on the outside of the Jeep.

It looks to me like the rack you built would actually take up space that could be used to haul gear. Sorry to bust on your design. Just giving you my opinion. It looks good though and as long as it works - thats what counts.

 

The allow you to put stuff under the bottom that you want to put stuff on top of, but don't want to take the stuff that is on top out every time you need to get to the stuff on the bottom.

Or something like that.

In the case of the one I just built, the Jeep it is on no longer has the rear cargo area, and the fuel cell is where the cargo area was. Had to have a rack above it in order to carry anything at all.

 

97XJ_95YJ, I understand what you are saying, but since I want my jeep to carry stuff to the trail, I cant have something hanging at the rear. And also as MCSCOTT was saying, it will allow me to have two level to put stuff. Might as well end up putting the toolbox under, and the lighter stuff on the rack. And being made of extended plate, instead of stacking up stuff, I can attach it, so it won't bounce all over the place.

Anyway for the price I paid (5$), I still have room for improvement and re-building the thing if it does not work.

Good design. I like the expanded metal idea, might want to split some hose to tie wrap to the edges for a non snag edge. $5 is a steal!!!

I agree on making some thing to cover the tops of the V's on the basket.

 

I see what you're saying. For $5 you can't go wrong!

To hold stuff in place in my YJ on the trails, I usually just throw everything in the back. Then I bought one of those bunggi truck bed covers (think spider web made of bunggi cords) for a small pickup truck. I stretch that over my gear and cargo area. It holds everything in place and keeps stuff from flying out when on the trails or when driving down the road with the top off. It cost me $14.

 

They make a U shaped piece just for covering the edges of expanded metal.

 

Are you sure those are V's, they could be W's, which I think makes a difference when you try to cover them up.

 

Actually I think Bob put it in upside down, those are M's. R)

 

AH, that is why there isn't anything on there to cover them up, I don't think anything is available for M'sR)

I like the idea of your basket for storage. Maybe you could devise a slide out tray for the lower storage area. Interior storage is a problem for CJs.

 

Yep, it's easy for the CJ6 guys to laugh at that.
