Hello, I'm sure there are discussions on this but I just want to see if there are any fresh ideas/help. I am probably going to get a 350 out of a 87 2500 and was looking for any help on what I should do on the conversion. I read the article on the site but just seeing what everyone says. thanks

A SM465 tranny is a great tranny. The SM465/Novac Dana300 adapter unit is 15.1 inches long. Same as a Jeep SR4,T4 or T5 with a Dana300. So, if that is your swap, no drive shaft Mods!
However, the SM420 has lower 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears than a SM465. It is also 1.2 inches shorter. When you start lifting the jeep, you will be glad to have the reduced driveline angles.

Huh. I thought that the SM420 is shorter, but all the conversion kits use a spud shaft which ends up longer than the SM465 and adapter combo. If you look at the SM420, it has a big bulge on the passenger side which I would guess interferes with the PSD transfer cases if they are snugged up against the transmission. Thus the spud shaft and longer adapter for the SM420.

I'd suggest, if you get serious about this, that you call Eric (Erik?) at Novak and get his opinion. The SM465 is also a newer transmission, so I'd think you'd have a little easier time finding one than a SM420.

I was waiting for my '88 to kick the bucket, but it won't die! This was going to be my intention also.
Measure carefully, measure twice, check again, and cut only you're sure of your measurement, and test fit if you can.

Novac makes a pretty short (3.2 inches) Dana 300 adapter for the SM420. Total length of tranny and adapter is 13.9 inches. I think this is about the shortest granny low tranny/ Dana 300 assemblies available.
