The reason I ask is I bought a 74 today with a 401. The tranny is a 3 spd, and the transfer case is 4L-2H-N-2L I think. I think the rear end is a Dana 44. I was curious as to how this will hold up to the engine. Also was wondering if the same clutch can be used as with the 304, since I've got one new in the box. I was gonna use the front axle/diff from my 77.

Why not swap in the drivetrain (engine/tranny/tcase) out of the 74??

Oh I am for sure, but I was wondering if they were the same t/tc as what I already have. How can I ID them? All I know is the shift patterns are the same.

It's probably a T-15 (originally from behind a 304) but it could be a T-14 (originally from behind the 6). There may be a tag under one of the top cover bolts, otherwise the T-15 will have a casting number T15 or 1307. A T14 will say T14 or 1302. If it's a T-15, use it. The TC is the same as what you have, Dana 20.

If you want to use the rear 44 axle, you'll have to move the spring perches outward. The '74 axles will have different gear ratios than your 77 (either 3.73 or 4.27), so you can't mix the axles without regearing. I'd suggest you use both axles from the '74 (if you want the 44) and if you have front disk brakes on the '77, move everything from the ball joints outward to the '74 axle. That's assuming that the '74 axles aren't broken (you never know with a 401).

Funny you should say that. The front diff. on the 74 is gearless. I think he said he broke a pinion gear in it.
