So I said to myself "Self, why should Dan have all the good crack dreams?" R)

Anyway, I've been giving some thought to repowering the old flatty with a Dauntless, keeping the T-90 and D18 in place. Cast iron manifolds, dual exhaust out the side with turbo mufflers and an HEI setup keeping the Rochester 2G.

So I'm hoping some of the folks like Joel and Jim can give me an idea as to what I have in store for this little project. I know I'll need an adaptor for the T-90 to mate up with the Dauntless bellhousing, and I'm planning to use a chain linkage of some sort. The Jeep is already 12-volt, so that is covered. I know I'll need to have the rad modified to move the lower hose over to the other side. Will the 4-cylinder rad keep a stock V-6 cool? How about a fan? Can I keep a mechanical fan? Will I have to butcher the grille shell to move the rad forward? How about the saginaw steering? Which manifolds work out? Will Billy ever come back to this board? Will Sparky ever have a Jeep that runs on its own power? Will Panzer make a trail ride?

    Inquiring minds want to know....

Say it aint so Steve :( On the other hand a true (Dan style) crackpipe idea would be to put a northstar in there or something similar.

I have a '48 flattie with a dauntless in it and a stock radiator and original to the 225 fan. Cools just fine. It has saginaw steering and I used that later model flat rear exit manifold on the steering side. the radiator is in nearly the stock location , wasn't much hacking on the grill if I remember correctly.

    Go Steve Go !
I would try and find the stock CJ5 frame mounts for the V6..makes the job easier in my opinion.
    steering
    exhaust
    yadda
    yadda
    all the normal stuff
I run the 4 cyl radiator in mine in the stock mounts/location
5 blade fixed steel (stock V6) should work fine for you
with careful planning, even the battery box can stay
    lengthen/shorten d/shafts
it's really not that hard to do
the grille butch/move rad forward is mostly done for sbc swaps, not V6

I use a 4 cyl Rad on all of my rigs with a mechanical fan - flex fan. I have used the stock tranny mount locations and find that it binds the D Valve cover to the firewall. I have done this with stock Dauntless and Buick exhaust manifolds as well as headers… Manual and Power Saginaw installs.

Recommend moving the engine forward about 1” to give more room at firewall – impacts shifter locations and drive shafts. I use the Novak Motor mounts – ya a little more $, better flexibility on the install.

‘course you could limit impacts by using stock locations and bumping the the firewall back, I also like a 2” body lift to tuck things in…

Guess there are more ways to go than you could imagine – you just need to pick your poison.

My new project – ’49 3A – 225, HEI, 2G, T90, D18, Warn OD, Power Saginaw, 11” Drums… Path – 2” body lift, stock tranny mounts, chain clutch (possibly swinging pedals if they present themselves) Buick Manifolds, exhaust inside frame rails…

    confused :)

Ya know I've got a fresh 383 short block waiting for a vehicle to go in right Steve ;) I think if your going to swap something in you may as well go FI if possible.

You've got a very valid point there Jason, but I guess I have to admit that the whole computerized-everything era in cars came in while I was conspicuously absent from the hobby. Not saying that isn't a possibility, but it's outside of my comfort zone right now. By the time I ever get the coinage together to actually do this swap, that may change, but I gotta get through my last year of college and then grad school. This is a long-term crack-pipe dream....

If he wants it to run under water he's gonna need a Caterpillar drive like the one in "The Hunt for Red October".

    Steve,

    easy answer:

Buy A V6 CJ5 --fun and affordable (and fits sideways in a two car garage with the flatty in the ready position at the door -- ask me how I know ;) )

<jeeps are like horses --better as pairs in the stable :D >
