I just pulled a Ford NP 435 tranny that was just covered in crud. What I have been doing is taking a stiff wire brush to it and spraying it off with Brakleen. For the really heavy crud, I use a sliver of wood to dig it out. You might try using some diesel fuel for cleaning, I use that alot. Hope this helps.

Brake cleaner is uber expensive, there's a cheaper alternative. Get a deep pan (6 to 8 inches, like an oil drain pan) that will hold the tranny and pick up some cheap lacquer thinner. I use scrapers, parts brushes, and old toothbrushes to clean things up. The lacquer thinner is flammable, but it's easy to take the safety precautions. Once you get the heavy crap off, use the brake cleaner to remove the oily film you'll have left, then you'll be clean enough for paint.

Just a thought... I cleaned and powder coated my trans and trans case. I took it out put one can of degreaser on it, let it sit for about five mins then pressure washed it. That cleaned most of the gunk off then it took half a can of brake clean to finish the job. Zero scrubbing was necessary. Just remember to cover the front shaft on the trans.

I used kerosene initially, then used my handheld steamer (with its scrub brush) to get off more. The kitchen scrub pads (including the pan scrubbers with the blue stuff) work well. I didn't find a really good cleaning bit that didn't include scrubbing.
