I need to weld new leaf spring perches on a 72 cj5 model 20 real axle. I am going to move them outward.I had a model 44 on the rear and 30 on front that I am going to remove because I did not want drums on front and rear.Any ideas how far the from the backing plate the perches need to be welded.Any ideas were I can get a 73 cj5 dashboard

Just saw one on an Ebay store- not an auction. I had ebay searched for "jeep front bumper", and after the 42 auctions there was a list of stores. It was the very first one. Or, www.buildajeep.com

Why change from the 44, 30 setup just swap out the front drums to discs and go. In my opinion the 44 was better than the 20 anyway. From every thing I've read it was much stronger.

Just need to center the axle under the jeep where its going to ride and line the new perches up with the leaf springs and tack them on. Then pull it out and weld it up solid. Thats probably the easiest way, plus you'll get the pinion angle right.

Supposedly the 44 knuckles will fit on the 30. To swap 44 discs you'd need to use everything from the knuckles out from the 44 as the wheel bearing surfaces on the 44 are larger than the 30. A simpler approach would be to use the disc setup from a D30. To use the D30 parts you need to replace the inner wheel bearing race (cup) with P/N LM501311. This moves the rotor out about 1/8" so the inside brake pad clears the bracket. The D44 rear axle you have is far superior to the model 20. It should be relatively easy to put disc brakes on as well using '77 - '93 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 caliper brackets. Easy to find at a wrecking yard. They can be from a pickup, Blazer or Suburban. The same Chevy setup can be used to convert the D30 to discs if you can't find D30 parts. You need to use the 1 1/8" rotors for a '77 - '78 Jeep.

disk brake hubs are different than drum brake hubs. The inside surface of the disk brake hub is machined flat for the rotor to fit.

Budget disk brake set up I did on a rear 44. Works good.
