Hello folks. I'm new here, and to owning a jeep. I recently bought a cheap old 77 cj5 that needs a lot of body work. It's not bent up, just rusted pretty bad. Got a 304 in it. It'll crank, but it's hard and when it does it smokes. From what I can tell it has new selenoid, distributor cap, plugs, and plug wires. It's getting fuel, because I can see it pumping through an inline filter close to the engine. I think it has a 3 speed transmission, and it needs a master cylinder and u-joint. One headlight works, not sure about wipers or guages. Also needs a keyswitch, as key was lost. I gave $500 for it, and with the mc and ujoint it would be driveable. Any advice yall can give me would be appreciated as I attempt to semi restore this thing to half decent shape. I just wanted a jeep to ride around in, and I liked the 5 better than the 7. Can't really fit behind the wheel too good though. I think I'm gonna have to find some way to tilt the seat back some. I don't want to spend a ton on it, but don't mind a little here and there to get it running good. Any tips on a tune up, body work, etc would be great. Thanks guys.

4WD drive hardware has body panels- i had to replace the rocker /lower cowl panels in mine. $17 for each panel, seem pretty decent quality, TIG weld best, MIG would be fine too. Anyway, they have almost all the panels so you can pick and choose what you need. Mine's worse case, which I didn't acually notice at first, are the body mounts. Not only were the mounts shot, but the brackets for a couple of them had rusted away and had to be replaced. They were originally sheet metal and I used light flat bar as replacements.

Blue smoke means burning oil. Black smoke too much fuel, white smoke too much air.

I'm from south Mississippi. I can see how this could get expensive. A u-joint and tune up has turned into a u-joint, master cylinder, radiator, gas tank, and key switch in the last 3 days. I'm sure the list will get longer. I can already see stuff under the jeep that probably doesn't have to be dealt with now, but I won't be able to stand it. My wife agreed I needed a project. I don't think she was counting on this.:)

Each one of those repairs will spawn a few of their own. So 2 quick fixes turned into 5 fixes and each one of them will spawn 2 or 3 and so on and so on...Enjoy!

I'm starting to see that. And on top of that one of my buddies came over yesterday and took a look, and now he wants to paint the whole thing chrome and yellow. That's one thing I won't do.

I do have a question. What the heck is an esab locker? I get the locker part, but esab?

Here's a couple of pics. I've just been working on it still on the trailer so I can move it around easier.

I'd be ok if I could find the right strap bolts for the rear u joint. I might even celebrate.
