Found a cheap '47 CJ2A that needs a lot of engine work. I was wondering what could easily be dropped into a 2a without a lot of work? Is there anything that's an easy swap for the original 4-banger? Maybe a small 6 or another 4 of some kind?

    Thanks

Have you read the Novak site? www.novak-adapt.com - go to knowledge base.

Unless you want to cut the firewall, inline 6s will be too long. The most popular swap is the family of Buick-Jeep V6s. There's a lot on the Novak site about that. V8s aren't so popular as they used to be, becasue the V6s fit so much better and are widely available.

Several 4-cylinder engines are also fairly easy too, including the Pinto/Mustang 2000 or 2300, the Chevy 153 I4 from Novas and some postal Jeeps, the GM/Mercruiser 3.0L (181) which is still sold as an industrial or marine engine (it's an overbored 153), The Pontiac/GM 151, and the AMC 150. Fitting an overhead valve 4-cylinder intop the engine compartment is pretty easy, but there will be a lot of work in any swap. The easiest swap is probably the Kaiser-Willys F-head 134, but it won't fit under the hood (too tall) in stock form, and doesn't give that much of a performance boost over the L134.

The Pinto 4 is probably the easiest and cheapest if you have to buy the adapter. Still not simple, since you have to source the engine and the right bell. I think the 153 or 181 is a better swap, and it uses the same adapter as the Chevy V8, so you should be able to find that pretty cheap used. They aren't very common though, and the 181 is even less so, but if you can find one, it would make a nice swap.

F head won't fit stock but with the right carb it will clear.

Can't remember exactly what carb. There's pics in the photo gallery at the Fall Midwest Willys Reunion of one.

    THERE you go!
Food for thought......a 500 Caddy with an Edelbrock Performer intake only weighs about 40 lbs. more than an iron small block Chevy.
    Muuaaaahahahaha <---mad scientist laugh
