hey there guys, I have a question about my D 18 growling when I let off the gas while travleing at hiway speed. It only growls when i'm in between being under power and when the engine is holding me back and slowing down. I checked underneath and can feel some moevment in the e-brake hub or output shaft, seems to be more than the .004-.006 factory spec. but I haven't actually checked it with an indicator. Before I take it apart I'd like to know is this a common problem for the d-18 or did somebody before me just get the shimming wrong. Also what kind of suprises am I likely to find in there. I've had the jeep only for a short time. Thanks!! Steven

There are 2 basic things that can go wrong with the d18. Bearing preload being out either from being improperly set, worn bearings or loose bolts. The other is the needle bearings and wear on the intermediate gear shaft. Thats the shaft you can see from the back of the transfercase thats in between the output shaft and the small (5") round pto cover.

Is it a differnt sound than before it was rebuilt? The Dana 18 is "noisy", you hear alot of gear whine with them. The later Dana 20 was suposed to be the "quiet" Transfercase.

Steven, I recommend that you read Rick Stiver's D18 rebuild guide available here-

    http://www.willystech.com/wt/Model18TCase/Model18TransferCase.html

He has good info on dissasemby & what to check in your case. I've just finished mine (more or less) using the guide, seems to be a few bugs with the assembly phase instructions but nothing catastrophicly wrong. I've got pics of my rebuild here-

    http://www.tantel.ca/Images/The Sludge Pile/Section_K_Transfer Case/

Any pic labled "Rebuild" with an "A" number after it refers to the appropriate section of Rick's guide.

If you have any questions feel free to ask :).

Another source of growl can be misalignment of the drive train due to bad motor mounts and tranny mount. This of course leads to output bearing wear...
I've seen cases where new mounts solved the growl, if caught early enough.
