I did a search and could not find anything, but does anyone happen to know the weight of a stock cj5 with a i6 in it? Looking to buy a trailer to tow it and I want the smallest I can get to tow safely. Looking at a single axle 6'x12' rated at 2900lbs. thanks in advance for the help.

We had a thread on this a while back - most weights came in between 2200 and 3000 lbs IIRC. I think Jeep lists the curb weight of an intermediate CJ at around 2400 lbs, but it would be easy to add several hundred pounds of accessories. The 6 and the V8 are only about 50 lbs different.

I don't think that is enough trailer. My fiberglass body jeep I estimate at 3500 pound with no gear.

GVW is not curb weight. It is the gross vehicle weight, a maximum not to be exceeded when loaded with passengers and gear. The curb weight is the empty weight of the vehicle fully fueled.

If your Jeep can drive on the road, drive to a truck stop or someplace with large scales (scrap metal yards have them) and check your weight that way. Based on other discussions, it sounds like the single axle is a little too light for you.

The CJ got heavier over the years, but the ECJ5s were in the 2200-2500lb range stock.

My Scrambler is 3200lb with a 360 MoPar (Weighed on a truck scale) and 8274, and my M170 is 2400lb (wieghed on a set of 4 corner scales).

my '75 with a 258 i6 is listed as 3,750. If you want to know for sure you can look at your vin and use a vin decoder to figure it out...here is some info from tim that might help:
    VIN:
    J - Jeep Corporation
    5- 1975
    F - 3-speed manual
    83 - CJ-5
    A - 3750 GVWR
    A - 258 cid I6, 1V
    016490 - sequential serial number

There is also some info in the front of the Chiltons that breaks down how to ID your jeep...hope that helps

A single axle trailer will wander more than a double axle. Balance is more unforgiving with a single, and a blown out tire is potentially more dire. After the time and effort placed into your baby, go for a used double axle! I got a 14" dual axle with brakes for about $850 new, plus $400 more for trailer tires. I didn't even get a real good deal because I didn't know enough about trailers when I bought it. But a 14" will fit the smaller Jeeps.

Double axle deffinitely. Single axle trailers are not usualy built strong enough even if they are "rated" to haul that weight. You will be alot happier when you are traveling down the road without having the *** end of your tow vehicle snatched all over.

I agree with the others. You are asking for trouble with a single axle trailer. You NEED a double axle and you NEED brakes.
