I have a 1970 cj-5 and the driver side has its rear marker light recessed
and not the passenger side.Did they do this because of the side tire carrier ?

I just ground all the bondo and fiberglass out of the side and thought some one did some work but it looks originaly done this way.

I was wondering the same thing. I just removed some diamond plate off mine and assumed that I had some bondo on the right side. Mine is a 71 though. Here are pics of left and right side.

'70s and '71s are basically identical. Your's would have originally came w/ the same spare mount.:v6:

I think the rear marker(s) were added sometime during the mid year production of 1970's. I've seen a couple of early 70's (including mine) that have no recessed rear marker.

Mine was a March '70 build. I think that is when they changed things around.:v6:
