I have a fiberglass fender that I need to paint. I am going to use a self-etching primer and color from Duplicolor. Quesiton is I have some clear coat I want to spray on the finished product. I was thinking about this method let me know what you think.

    1. Clean and prep fender
    2. Sand fender with rough grit paper
    3. Spray primer 2-3 coats
    4. Wait 1 hour
    5. Spray on color
    6. Wait 10 minutes
    7. Spray second coat
    8. Wait 10 minutes
    9 Spray 3rd coat
    10.Wait 10 minutes
    11.Spray clearcoat. 1-2 coats.

Does this sound like it will work? Any suggestions on how to get a better finished product?

:iagree: A paint job is only as good as the prep job. Wetsand with a sanding block or my personal preferance, a mixing stick broke down a little bit with the sandpaper wrapped around it.

The rough grit probably isn't needed on a glass fender (I'm guessing). It's used on steel to provide some tooth, then epoxy or etch, and then leveling primer. I'd think you could use 320 or such, then spray whatever primer the paint mfr recs for 'glass, and paint. Check with Duplicolor on using their etching primer over gel coat.
