Thanks for everyone's help about the hydraulic clutch setup on my 72 CJ5 with the 225 v6. I was thinking, what about a cable clutch? It would be a cheap way to get the jeep on the road (need to get rid of linkage). Anyone know about cable setups?

Factory clutch setup on my '70 is cable. I don't know about the '72s. Cable works fine, but it takes some getting used to. They tend to be rather jerky and there is definitely a learning curve to learn to operate them smoothly. A chain or hydraulic setup would be way more forgiving.:v6:

It seems to me the cable would be an ideal system for a Jeep as long as the cable itself didn't wear out. Hydraulics never seem to give any warning that they are going to fail, and are nearly impossible to jury-rig when they do. If the cable broke, it would be fairly easy to kludge up a replacement cable, and you could easily carry a spare. Considering the '72 Jeep was delivered with a cable, it should be fairly easy to fab the brackets and install one.

My CJ5 had a cable. Only trick was to keep it coated in axle grease to keep it from rusting. Only replaced one cable in 18 years....but have to say the chain setups sound like a better idea.

Thanks again. Does anyone have a picture of the chain setup, or if anyone has routed a cable on a 72-75?

Not putting it down, I have no plans of changing mine out. Just has a different feel than a hyd or solid link like a chain. To me it almost feels like it cams over, kinda like a compound bow. :v6:

I agree with timgr - the cable system sounds ideal for older Jeeps, given the frame flexing. Even so, this seems like an item that people debate a lot. For my part, keeping it simple and trail-fixable is the most important thing.

if memory serves me the 72 came with a cable which fed up through the floor. This setup was also offered in the Commando. The thing I remember most was the cable pulling through the tin "stop" on the end. I don't think a chain setup will work, as it is designed for floorboard pedals.

Yes! I've written that in two separate posts to this topic by this author, and pointed twice to the picture in the '72 FSM.

All '72s came from the factory with a clutch cable. '72 Jeeps with a bellcrank were fitted with the bellcrank by the dealer in response to a Jeep service bulletin. Jeep supplied a kit for the changeover using a collection of '73 factory parts.

Well, I'm sorry. While sorting through the many replies on this question, I apparently missed both of your answers.
