My CJ2A was converted to 12v. Are the points and condenser the same as the old 6V system? I'm having ignition problems. Jeep seems to be cutting out while I'm driving, like its running out of fuel. But, the tach goes dead and it doesn't sputter and buck like I'm running out of fuel. Its more like I'm turning off the ignition. Could it be the points/condenser?

    Thanks.

did you find your problem yet? the coil needs to be a 12 volt coil and most will reqire an external resistor, I am running a NAPA IC-64 which does not require it. however I doubt the coil is causing your problem but if it is not correct it could cause the points to fail pematurely. have you tried jumping a hot wire from the battery to the resistor in order to eliminate the possibility of a bad ign switch or wiring.

The problem is not fixed. I noticed my battery goes dead if I don't use my CJ2a for say, 5 days. I don't have a radio or anything else I know of that would use current with the key out of the ignition. I'm not sure what resistor you are talking about.

    Thanks

Ballast resistor if the coil needs it, white ceramic thing with one wire in and one wire out going to the coil.

Otherwise the coil will say something about internally resisted.

A bad voltage regulator is often the culprit when a battery goes dead over several days without use.

What are the differences in the distributors for L heads and F heads? I have an L head and a new cap I just bought does not quite fit, it is able to rotate abt 10 deg. Also, will a 6 volt cap do fine on a 12 volt system?

The distributors will interchange between an L- and F-head engine, but there are about a half-dozen or more different units that were used in the 30 or so years these engines were made. You need to get the distributor number off the tag or housing in order to be sure you have the correct parts. 6v or 12v is immaterial, but if you are running 12v you will need to have either a ballast resistor or a coil with the resistor that is built-in. Running without a resistor will work just fine, but you will fry the point contacts in short order. ;)
