Well I have done some checking on these axles and I have found that the 25 has a 7 3/4 ring gear and the 27 has a 7 1/5 ring gear, the 25 sounds better than the 27 in that respect. But the axles in the 27 normaly came with the Cardan Superior U joint axles, how can I tell if the axle I am getting from a buddy has the GOOD axles in it without tearing it all apart? I realy dont want to waste the time tearing it down if I can avoid it. Will be ordering the Lock Right for the 25 next week, thanks...

Alot of times there are tags on the axles that tell if it is bendix joints instead of Cardan. I think all 27's came with cardan joints.
The ring gear in the 25 is not stronger than the 27 as the gears are thinner. The center section in the 27 is larger than the 25. Probably another 7-10lbs of iron in there.

Thanks, having said that would it be a good idea to use the 27 axles in the 25 to build a superior axle than stock ? if so wish me luck on the Rubicon in Sept. with the Marlin Crawler crew since I will be the only truly all Jeep, Jeep there...

I thought I read somewhere that the 27 has larger axle shafts as well.

If the Dana 27 has the same gears as your 25 I'd bolt in the whole 27. If not, throw the 27 shafts in the 25 and keep the 25 shafts as spares. You'll probably want to scrounge up an additional set of shafts on top of that if you're really gonna be running a front locker with (from your Avitar photo) what looks to be a pretty heavy set of wheels and tires.

Also watch for snap rings on the end of the axles instead of threaded castle nut and cotter pin.

Thanks I am runnin' 33X12.50X10 Pro Comps
I have spare axle shafts for the 25 and spare hubs, they're the old school pull the flat bars and turn (dont know the name but I like them) will be adding a Lock right locker in front and a limited slip in the rear.

Just a thought. Put the locker in the rear as it's much stronger than the 25 or the 27. Put the LS in the front so you can steer it and not put so much stress on a less than bullet proof (if there is such a thing) axle. You need the most traction in the rear anyway. I've run that combo exactly with 12.50 x 33 MTs on the Rubicon, Fordyce and the Ducy and never broke anything.

Given that info, I'd still go with the LS in the front. If you think you need it, you can always put a locker in the rear later. In fact I believe that Powertrax makes a locker that fits into a LS case. The biggest problem will be finding a Powerlok for the 27. Probably next to imposible for the 25. Kings Beach is North Lake Tahoe.
