I have a 72 frame with with a dana 44 rear and a dana 30 front. 3:73 gears. I would like to put on a model 30 front axle and a model 20 rear axle.I want disc on the front and drum on the back. Will this work?Any idea what axles I can use that will have disc on the front. Are these axle interchangable,Can I use mix and match any of these axles.

You can go as mlid or as wild as your pocket book will let you. With a lot of combinations available. 30 or 44 or ford 9 inch in front, 20 or 44 or ford 9 inch 0r 60 in the rear. Just match your axle ratio's.

Keep the D44 rear and just swap the front to a D30. You do not want the weaker 20 rear.

If you could find a newer 30 with disc brakes on it, it should be a simple swap. I would not swap the 44 rear for a 20 though. Just make sure you have the same gearing.

Count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. Then divide the ring gear by the pinion gear.

Easier - the tooth count is stamped into the side of the ring gear.

Lets see, if I read you message correctly you already have a Dana 30 Front Axle and a Dana 44 in the rear. And would like disc brakes in the front and drums in the back, so just add disc brakes to the front axle and keep the rear dana 44 which has drum brakes already. I don't know why everyone else is offering some complicated solutions to a simple request. And, by no means would I swap a dana 44 for a model 20. The dana 30 disc swap is pretty straight forward with the use of Chevy or Jeep dana 44 six hole caliper brackets and calipers and using the jeep 1 1/8 thick discs. Simple solution to a simple request.

Yes for simplicity you have one of the best combination already.
    Just add disc brakes.
I assume you have flanged axles in the 44?
