You do realize that the t86 is not syncro'd in 1st gear like the t14 is?
You will need the bull gear for a t86, it is 6 splined where the t14 bullgear is a 10 spline.

I did not realize that a T86 was not synchro'd but that is OK.

Still need to know what a bullgear is....

I have a worn out T14 & a smashed D18 and have located a T86/D18 replacement and am trying to see how doable this is.

The gear on the back (outside) of the transmission that drives the transfercase.

ahh, but what if I just removed the old T14 & D18 and replaced it with a T86 & its D18? Then just the tranny mount? Any difference in driveshaft length? The T86 was behind a V6.

You would probably be better off rebuilding what you have. The t14 can be rebuilt in about 3 hours if its cleaned up good and you have a dummy pilot shaft. The dana 18 takes alittle more but its worth it in my opinion to rebuild waht you have rather than expect another one from the paper or something to be in much better shape than what you already have. The t14 is about 1/2" longer not enough to worry about driveshaft length.

Thanks. I could most likely rebuild the T14, know it needs some new gears. The D18 has a smashed case, have another case, but the innards do not look too good on the original.

I agree...especially if you are not use to the nonsynchro first and reverse gear. Everytime I let "experienced" drivers get behind the wheel of my t-86, something always goes wrong. I say rebuild what you have!!

Re the T-14, not meaning to diss it (much), but the T-86 has better ratios IMO. I have owned a Jeep with the T-14, and I really disliked the big jump between 2nd and 3rd. If it were mine, I'd put the T-86 in for the nonce, or work on a swap. The non-synchro 1st of the T-86 (or T-90) is not a great handicap - I can adapt to it pretty easily. The T-14 is an ok transmission, but there's no really compelling reason to keep it.

I liked the ratios of my T-15 much better - there's been some discussion here about swapping a T-15 into a V6 CJ, but I don't know the specifics. That would be my choice if I were to keep a 3-speed behind a V6: stronger and better ratios. The wide-ratio 4-speeds are also very popular, and will certainly increase the resale value of your Jeep if present.

    T-14: 3.1, 2.6, 1.0
    T-86: 2.8, 1.7, 1.0
    T-15: 3.0, 1.8, 1.0

Yea but that 1st gear in the t86 sucks when you don't have good gears in your chunks. I'd take the 2nd gear of the t14 anyday over the t86's crappy 1st gear.
