    Hello all,

I will be changing my master cylinder in the near future.
I saw a picture on Herm The Overdrive Guy's site of a different master cylinder for the under-floor style that I have.

What year(s) and/or make(s) is the alternative master cylinder? '72-75 CJ possibly?
Are there master cylinder push rod or mount modifications necessary?

I'd sure like to convert to a more modern master cylinder while I'm down there working.

Thanks for any and all help!

I've e-mailed Herm before and he was VERY helpful.

But I have an connection to a local auto parts store where I get parts for store cost so finding the exact application would be a HUGE help and I'd save a LOT of cash.

I used an early 70's drum brake MS to replace the bad one on my 71. Had to adapt the lines and use the old rod and boot, but otherwise worked perfectly. I belive the total cost was in the upper $20's, including the rebuilt MC.

Are you just trying to get away from the top that bolts on, otherwise the 71 MC should be fine. Go to any mom and pop auto shop with books and they should be able to help you.

the books at my local FLAPS has 2 of'em. 1 bolts down (the 1 I used), the other has a wire holding it down 'delco' style.

    Thanks for the responses, folks.

The reason I asked was my brother's '74 CJ5 M/C looks just like the one I've seen used on the net.
From the way it sounds, it's the one to use.
    Cool.
Yep, they're MUCH cheaper than the original '71 unit.
I'll still look into the pricing on the original anyway.

What scared me most was 4WD Hdwe. wants $140 plus shipping for the original! EEK!

I looked at rebuild kits and reman MCs. A Cardone reman w/ the spring wire top is $17.29 at O'reillys, Brakebest kit is $21.99. A new Brakebest MC is $39.99. You can also get a new Wagner or AC Delco but they don't list the price on their website.:v6:

Out of curiousity, do they list the original M/C?
    Maybe a rebuild kit?
    If so, how much?

I'm assuming the Brakebest rebuild kit will work for the original. Its $21.99, but the Cardone reman MC is less and its the springwire top (easier to get to).:v6:

    Thanks, folks.

Looks like I'll be converting to the later-model M/C.
