I am putting my new-used T15 in this weekend. I don't have a tranny jack so I was thinking of putting the tranny in and bolting it into the bell. Then putting the T/C in. I am doing it by myself and the two pieces together is quite difficult to handle. Has anyone tried this? Any tips/suggestions for either method? Also, I wanted to "flush" some detergent type oil through the cases to clean out any grime from cleaning gaskets surfaces and the outsides. It was suggested that I should use some ATF and gear oil. How long can I run this and at what mixture or what other oil?

My tranny jack is a sheet of plywood on a frame made of 2x4s. I slide my 3 ton jack under that and jack it up a little so I can slide it (with the legs still dragging). It isn't pretty, but I usually have to do everything by myself, too.

I'm glad I haven't had to do any engine/tranny/transfer case work on my CJ yet. I am dreading it. Everything else on this thing has been ridiculously hard to do compared to other vehicles. :)

I have done it at my parent's garage and on my driveway, but I was younger and stronger then. If it were mine, and I didn't want to take anything apart, I'd use a little mineral spirits to cean the mating surfaces and put them together. I would not experiment with flushing - I'd just change the oil after a few miles.

Do you have a floor jack? They can be had for ca $20 from Harbor Freight, Pep Boys, and such. One of these would nake the process much easier. I lifted the trans & TC into place by hand, and used the factory scissors jack to support the back of the bell housing.

Well I got it in over the weekend! It was a struggle though. I did mate the two halves together and put it on a piece of plywood and blocked the unsupported parts of the the combo on the plywood. I then slid it underneath the vehicle. I alternated putting shims under each side until it was high enough to put my jack underneath. It worked pretty well. I little wobbly though. I should have taken a picture. I ended up making the T/C bushings out of bronze and it is like brand new! I took it for a drive and man was it good to be on the road topless again!

Thanks for the help that got me wheelin again!

our local rental place has transmission jack -- a good one, for $20 or so per day. I got my own, since my projects tend to stretch out. Best money to spend for time/safety.
