I just aquired another 74 cj that i would like to build into a crawler. The problem i have is it has a 3 speed tranny, which is fine for the street, (i have that in my other one) but i dont like to feather the clutch, brake and throttle at severe inclines. i was wondering if anyone has a good suggestion for a reliable auto tranny that would work without a transfer case swap also. the new cj has a 304, model 20 transfer case, stock axles and 4 inch suspension lift and 2 inch body lift, 36" tires. i know a decent amount about repair and fabrication.

you might consider plumbing in a staging brake, mounting the pull lever on the dash; a Jeeper I know uses this set-up (jeepngem)
old trick from the good old days
sand drag, sand hill climbers use this to hold position before they mash the skinny pedal
less expensive than the tranny swap
    just a thought

If you want an automatic, the TH350 swap is popular. AFAIK the TH350 is the shortest available, which is important for a CJ-5 swap. Take a look at the Novak page http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/th350.htm

The TF999 could possible be used, but you'd need to take your tape measure to it to be sure. It's used in 1980 and later CJ-7s and Wranglers with a D300, NP207 or NP231. The D300 would be the best choice. The TF727 was used in Wagoneers until '92 but the pan sticks out to far for easy installation with a PSD TC.

I'm in the process of doing the 350 turbo swap in my 71. Using the Novack adapter to an 18 transfer. Kind of spendy but not having to shift gears I think it will be worth it.

A CJ5 with an auto and a 4 inch lift is going to give you one very funky rear driveline, just something to think about. We did one years ago and had to stretch the wheelbase to get it driveable.
