got me a free '78 15 gal tank and skid today w/sender.
i plan on installing it to work with my underseat tank for a nice 25 gal setup.
was not planning on spending $40 on a filler neck so if anyone has one lying around i would be interested ;)

    any thoughts or comments?

    thanks, chris

If I can get some good pics in the daylight this week, I'll show you the PVC one Peter made. Then he has a switch between the seats. He thinks it cost all of $2 and is waterproof.

dug up this old thread while searching the other day.

almost exactly 2 years after i got my tank i am finally going to install it here in a couple days

    pretty sad i know.

since i finished the bumper last week i have made a couple plates for the frame bracket holes and welded all of the plates to the frame and crossmember so my bumper is now rock solid (i hope). tonight i finally finished replacing 3 of the rear body mounts (another project started years ago... but no welder then) so i can now finish up the fuel tank project. i will take some pics tomorrow.

i have all the hose i need, but still looking for some brake line to run up the frame to the motor. all i have found are 5 ft pre flared lines that are just too short for what i need. anyone know of a chainwide source for rolled brake line? i guess any aluminum tube will work as long as it won't break too easily and comes in 5/16". so far autozone, checker, napa have been checked.

tomorrow night i will start the install without the line and will have to find it on monday somewhere.

[edit] almost forgot... i am also looking for some clips to mount the line to the frame with. don't want the drill in kind... looking for something like the stock clips used for wiring. any ideas?

    thanks, chris

    ;)

I know *zactly* your frustration...felt like it took me 6-8 month to do the gas tank install because of all the pre-work that had to be done.

Seems like I just saw those little spring clips...maybe in the help section of FLAPS?

I am suprised NAPA didn't have it. I have purchased 1/4 and 5/16 Stainless tubing in 25' & 50' coils from them.

    See http://www.vernco.com/brakes/id442.htm for part #'s

I just ordered my brakelines prebent from a place in Texas. Jeep Doctor I think.....Only had to "unbend" one line, and that was from having to pack it in the box.

My local NAPA (the warehouse for the area doubles as a store) had a box with various clips. I found the flat clips that slide over the edge of the frame and hold the wiring harness in place there.

did they have aluminum? wasn't looking for stainless. this is a smaller napa, maybe i will try another one.

tonight i will probably just get the filler neck installed and save the tank for tomorrow (day off).

    made some good progress today...

got the filler neck installed. sure was nervous about cutting that big hole in the body  worked out well though and ended up with a nice tight fit. i put the filler on the pass. side like boyink's. just not enough room to go over the brake light. it ended up being a little too close to the spare tire support so i had to trim a little off. made for some interesting grinding angles for sure. i noticed quite a bit of bondo and a large patch in that corner. guess it didn't like holding up the spare tire in it's younger years... seems pretty solid so i'm not going to mess with it right now.

i also got all the bolt holes drilled for the skid and made a few "adjustments" so that the skid would line up with the rear end of the tank. i was having problems with the tank hitting the frame rails and still having 1/2" of space between the crossmember and the skid. now it should hopefully fit nicely. all the hoses, sending unit and wires are hooked up and ready for install, just too tired to continue.

tomorrow i will need to weld in the 2 inner nuts on the rear crossmember since i won't be able to reach them during the install, then it's time to see if it all fits.

still looking for rolled brake line... i checked napa again and they only can get 3/16" line. not sure if that's what you guys got, but it's too small for fuel line. he is going to call back if he can find it. carquest can order 5/16" steel but i was looking for aluminum. i think i will go ahead and order it if napa falls through.

    pics tomorrow.

a little early, but i was thinking about removing stock filler tube(?) and plating off the hole like the intermdiates. i can think of a few things i could use in that space between the seat and the body.

anyone do this without completely hacking it up? i would like to save the tube if possible for either someone else in need or i might go to a 2 tank setup sometime in the future if i ever need the extra capacity.
