tire size on stock cj2a axles??

whats the biggest tire that the stock axles will handle?? i was thinking 31x9.50s, but 33's look like they could fit with some minor trimming too. mind you i kind of have a little bit of a heavy right foot and a v6 under the hood...

 

crawl for show
throttle for dough (meaning $$ it will cost you)
31s should do fine
keep in mind you can break an axle any time goofing off

 

I used to run a cj3a with 32's on it with v6 and stock axles, it did just fine. The same jeep has 33's on it now and is doing well, but the current owner does not drive her much.

 

I would say 31's myself, but I have found out that I can break these axles with even smaller tires. I had one with 33's on it and I think that is the only vehicle I have ever owned that I didn't break something in one of the axles. Of course I didn't drive it too long.

 

alright so 31's it is. now heres a harder question: which 31's?? im up in the Northeast where theres plenty of rutted and muddy trails, but also plenty of rocks too. my choices are any of the 31x10.5 or 31x12.5 super swampers, 31" MTRS, and the 31" MT baja claws. what do you guys think?? what has worked well for you?? are there any tires im missing out on?? should stay away from??

I'd stick with 31x10.5, wider and you will likely hit the frame on tight turns. I like the look of the MTR's.

 

You can't really go wrong with SS TSL's, and I especially like the SX's. If there is more mud you could go with Boggers, they work really good in that size. The Claws are great tires and you get a ton of grip in rocks when you run them with the tread turned around backwards. The MTR's are ok if you will also be seeing much street time. Just my .02

 

ok so im leaning towards the tsl radial in a 31x9.50. other than just bolting these on, would any other mods be needed/a good idea?? also what width/backspacing would be best for the wheels?? would the stock wheels work??

 

I have 33 TSL's and no issues --however, turning radius is marginal. I like 32's the best

 

I have these in 12.50-31 same as the 325-60x15 that BFG started for unlifted Jeeps. They worked well in the mud for me, ride good too. Swamper SSR

 

Interco makes great tires but, they are heavy, ride rough and dont last as long as others. Soft compond. That being said I still love them.

The Micky Thompsons, if you go bias you will be fine, the radials have thin side walls.

BFG is is also a good choice.

Good Year MTRs are another fine tire, just dont seem to like the mud we have here in north middle TN.
