Just received my replacement carb for my 1963 CJ5 .
It is a new solex carb.

Not too sure about connecting the throttle and choke cables though.
I hoping it is fairly intuitive and/or is exactly the same as the connection on the original carb.
Any advice or comments on what to watch out for or words of wisdom concerning the install?

    Thx
    Fred

    Pretty much the same connections.

No worries. It'll be fine. :)

Thanks for the words of confidence.

I am also wondering whether I need to use a torque wrench ( which I don't have) to bolt it down or just tighten it until it is nice and snugg?

A torque wrench would be best, but I have been able to get away with using the German torque specifications - gunetite.:)

IIRC the " choke" on a Solex is 90* different than the Carter YF. Stock choke pulls off side to side (as you sit in the rig) and the Solex will pull front to rear. No big deal, just don't kink your cable. HTH

I always torque things to "two ughs and a grunt" specs.

I always get confused on this one. If you fart after the grunt, doesn't that mean that you have overtightened it and need to start over?:)

I will probably be to weak rolling around laughing when I start to tighten the bolts thanks to you guys.

I will be sure to refrain from any beans prior.

Thanks ( SIDSCJ)for the heads up on the choke cable routing.

Should the Solex be ready to go without having to adjust idle speed and air mixture?

Mine was a bolt on and go, although I did need to tweak it for winter starting. Be sure your engine is really warmed up B4 you you adjust it, it does make a difference.:)

Fred, I put a Solex on my 61 last year. Cold-blooded but otherwise, so far so good. I left my fuel line stock, and added a U-shaped line to enter the carb from the opposite direction from stock. Also, in the thread Sparky sent you to, they mention routing through the wire and cable tangle. I cut my loom standoff, and added about an inch and a half to it; holds the wires up out of the way.

Make sure that the throttle linkage clears and doesn't bind up on your cable. I had to rebend the throttle linkage just a bit to keep from having to kink my choke cable. Other than that just bolt it on and adjust it after it warms up. A solex richens the mixture for choke instead of choking off the air.

Yes you will need to adjust the mixture and idle speed screws but it's EXTREMELY EASY.
Check your manual for the idle speed setting (my '71 F-134 was 700-750 rpm) and make sure it's right. You don't want a too-low idle speed, it'll just make it hard to start (ask me how I know... ).
The mixture screw is easy: get the engine to operating temperature and turn the screw until you reach the highest rpm and you're set.
You may have to readjust the idle speed after the mixture adjustment but it's VERY EASY.

    Congrats on the Solex!
    I love mine to death.
NO comparison to my old clapped-out Carter.
