Axle swap

    If one where to swap out the front and rear axels on a 1970 commando so they could have disc breaks all around what would one use:? The easiest and cheapest way?

    R) short answer. depends on what your ultimate goal is. a little more info would be helpful. if you plan on stayin with 32s, then why not just swap discs on your axles.

    If you're itching to swap, swap a D30 in the front and keep the 44 rear.

    Otherwise, keep the 27 and the 44 and put disks on them IMO.

    I guess my goal is to make it look off road ready but, I will never actuly take it off road. Something to cruise around the streets in. I dont really know what I want :cry: no money right now either so that doesnt help.

    If your just looking for better brakes on a "mall crawler" I'd just add a power booster and maybe 11" drums and call it done. It'll be cheaper and less work.

    Working on that right now! Can anyone post some pics of there rear suspension setup up if they have it lifted?

    Three ways to "lift" a Commando:

    1. shackle lift, a lot of folks do it, but not hte best
    2. custom leaf springs, no one makes a lift "kit" for the commando (other than helper springs or add-a-springs) and you have to get springs custom made
    3. go completely custom and redo all the hangers on the frame rails etc. Takes a pretty good deal of tech. know-how .

    I've heard it said and agree, Commandos are difficult to modify and is probably one of the reasons you don't see a great many around that are modified. I'm planning on using custom springs, but cost right now is prohibiting me from pulling the trigger.

    Not to steer you from here, but the American Jeepster Clup has a board with a lot of good info and some owners pics of what your looking for.

    Oh, I forgot about the spring over conversion, but if you have the rear mono spring that won't work for the rear end.

    Shackle lift on the rear is probably ok, but looks kind of funny. Likely makes it easy to bend a spring if you back into something with any force.

    Long shackles on the front is dangerous, since it changes the steering geometry and adds a lot of looseness to the steering. You need to lengthen the shackles by double the amount of lift you will get. Anything more than an inch or inchandahalf longer shackles in the front is IMO excessive - and that does not add a lot of lift.

    yeah I got the bigger shackels in the back but I dont think it did anything except faltten out my rear springs
