I need help finding the correct temperature sending unit for my Jeep.

I’ve got a 1968 CJ-5 with the 225 V6. When I bought the Jeep, the PO had the intention of putting in a set of custom gauges, so he removed the sending units and installed the aftermarket ones for the new gauges, but that’s about as far as he got. Since I like the original speedo and gauge set, and they were still in the dash, I wanted to reconnect them bla bla bla....

Long story short.... I’ve been to two different commercial parts stores and can’t seem to get the correct temp sending unit, I even called the customer service at 4WD and they said they just “didn’t have it”.

I've installed the ones they sold me at the parts stores and I’m pretty sure the gauge is working properly. When I first start the engine, the needle will move from “C” up to about the halfway mark on the gauge. As the Jeep warms up to normal temperature the gauge needle will rise up and stay around the “H”, indcating that the engine is overheating.

I’ve checked my coolant temp just to be sure, it’s operating at 185-190 degrees. So I’m assuming the problem is a mismatch between the sending unit and gauge.

I’m not sure if it helps, but my serial number is [8305 S 240864] and my speedometer is one of the really old school ones with the speed numbers that read in single digits like “1", “2", “3", “4" etc...

I'm wondering if I should be using one from a 4 cylinder or something???

    Any info is greatly appreciated...

    Thanks,
    Allan

Allan, it's the same guage cluster for either V6 or F4 so a four cylinder guage will have the right resistance range on it. You may have to hit a plumbing supply store for an adapter to make it physicaly fit:rofl:

There was a thread a while back that gives the correct resistance readings for various temperatures-
