Im putting an offenhauser 4bl manifold on my 75-76 231 of engine. First question is does the valley pan need to be there or can i get rid of it. second im thinking of changing the cam out with a sig erson i got on ebay, should i worry about cam bearings or just stick a new timing chain on and go? Thanks alot.

ehauff - if the engine has not been built in a while, your gonna want to swap out the bearings and lifters with the cam swap. My machinest (old timer) points out that if your swapping spinning parts - change the parts that it rides on.

FWIW - I have the valley pan in my setups.

Cam bearing are really hard to change out. You need a special tool and you need too line up the oil holes that are in the bearing. I don't think you can do this without having the engine totally disassembled. I would just throw in the new cam with the old bearings and use alot of cam lube.

Changing the cam bearings in modern engines is a machine-shop-only procedure. Usually cam bearings are only replaced at rebuild time. Camshaft replacement means reusing the camshaft bearings, unless there was a lot of metal sent through the engine (ie flat cam lobe) or you have low oil pressure that you have traced to the cam bearings.

You should definitiely use a new timing set and new lifters (required with a new cam), but I would go ahead and install the new cam if the engine is otherwise in good shape.

keep the valley pan. i too wanted to get rid of it, but in actuality the calley pan has little notches that will catn the engine block side and stay in place as you put the intake on.
