258 4.2L or 4.0L

    I am having trouble identifying a in-line six I have to rebuild, I was told the engine was built in 1979 and then recently told the numbers on the block gave the date of 1983. The block numbers are 309C09, EF3235444 what does this tell anyone,,, please help.Thansk very much

    258. The 4.0L was built in the late 80s to early 2Ks

    1st digit = year = 1983
    2 & 3 = mth = Sept
    4th = 258
    5 & 6 = day = 9th of Sept

    Your engine was built on 9 September 1983 & it is a OHV 258 2 bbl with 8.0 to 1 compression.
