I want to put a harness type belt in but it requires a shoulder height mounting bar. I don't wan't to restrict access to the backseat because I like to take people for rides. Anybody have any ideas or ways of doing it so that I have the strength I need and backseat access. There will be a bar running crossways on the floor for the hip belts. Can I tie into that with a vertical, if she's upright:twisted:, bar that joins the horizontal about the edge of the seat?

I've always heard its bad to mount the shoulder straps to the floor bar, mainly b/c its bad on your back if you do happen to roll over.

The should mounts should be at about your mid back if possible.

Not sure if this would work but let me try to describe it. If looking from the back behind your driver seat you had a bar go from shoulder height on the left down at an angle to the floor bar and then put a tab on it at the correct height and then did the same on the passanger side would that limit the access to the rear of the jeep too much???

I'd bet that anyone thats limber enough (or small enough) to climb in the back as it is now, could also navigate a horizontal bar across the back of the seats. It just ads to the adventure of being in the Jeep. :D

Honestly, there just isn't any good way of doing it. This is one of those things I struggled with when considering a cj6 buildup. If your set on using harnesses I'd just make your backseat passengers climb over the side. More than likely they will be kids and or guy friends anyways as the back seat is small and cramped so it shouldn't be too difficult for them.

A crossbar also provides a nice grab bar for back seat passengers. Just tell 'em its for their safety.:)

This is one of the reasons I just went with late model TJ shoulder belts - what a pain it would be to have to climb over a bar all the time getting in the rear.

FWIW - I've always wondered about that mounting guideline - what data is it based on with regards to rollover type, vehicle speed, crash direction, etc? Sometimes I think we're trying to build rollcages in Jeeps based on data from drag racers or stock cars, when a typical Jeep roll is going to be much slower.

Don't know if you can see it too good or not, but this one has something that might work for you. You said you were gonna have a bar going across the botton, so you might be able to come of the side bar and bend it down to the bottom bar. If you have a center console, it probably won't help you much. Either way, it makes it a little bit easier than trying to climb over a center bar that goes all the way across. You probably don't want to go up as high with it though. See if you can tell from this pic.

That's the idea I was trying to get across. I didn't think about having a center console though. From what I have read the angle, being parallel to the ground at shoulder height, can be 5 degrees downward to 30 degrees upwards. Thanks everybody for your input. I will post some pics with what I come up with.

How bout some crazy horizontal bar behind the seats that the belts attach to at the proper height that pivots on the side bars and securely locks in the center when needed. It may be some type of gate to the rear that would serve both functions. May be a neat design for some Jeep magazine photo shoot also. :)
